Romania will remain an absolute supporter of Moldova’s integrity and sovereignty, Romanian President Traian Basescu said during a flying visit to Chisinau on August 20. <\/p>\n

After a meeting with President Vladimir Voronin, the two heads of state made statements for the press, expressing their positions on the conflict in Georgia and on the frozen conflicts existing in the region. <\/p>\n

Basescu drew a parallel between the situations in Transdniestria, Kosovo and South Ossetia, saying that these breakaway republics have unified minorities and a local administration that declared independence and is supported from outside. <\/p>\n

"Currently, there are sovereign and independent states that are dismembered in the name of the collective rights of the minorities, collective rights that are not recognized, but used as undeclared motivation to affect the independence and sovereignty of these states. It happened so with Kosovo and Serbia lost a part of its territory. The same could happen in Ossetia and Abkhazia and such a type of political approach should be stopped," Basescu said. <\/p>\n

Speaking about the conflict in Transdniestria, the Romanian president said that it is similar to the happenings in Kosovo. The only difference is that there is no clash. "I approve of Moldovan authorities’ capacity to not respond to Transdniestria’s challenges. Presently, there is no suitable mechanism for solving frozen conflicts and the EU should more actively engage in resolving them and in guaranteeing Moldova’s integrity and sovereignty," Basescu said. <\/p>\n

For his part, Vladimir Voronin said that Moldova understands very well the situation created in South Ossetia because it faces the Transdniestria conflict. "The military conflict in Georgia arose because its resolution was delayed. The secessionist regimes had time to develop and consolidate, establish relations with some of the states. The dispute in Transdniestria will be solved only peacefully. The UN, the EU and the whole international community should only more actively engage so as to avoid a repeat of the South Ossetia scenario," the head of state said. <\/p>\n
