Romania’s President Traian Basescu, after a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yushchenko in Kiev on Wednesday, said that all the settlement mechanisms in Transdniestria are stretched to the limit and the conflict could break out if only political conditions appear, Mediafax reported. <\/p>\n

Basescu said that there are elements of conflict in Transdniestria as in South Ossetia and Kosovo, i.e. the existence of a unified minority concentrated in a region and “the so-called legitimacy of the mother country to intervene and defend its citizens.” <\/p>\n

The Romanian president said that the Kosovo mechanism was identically repeated in South Ossetia and the same mechanism is perfectly prepared for Transdniestria. But Transdniestria does not have the necessary political conditions owing to the way in which the problem is managed by Moldova, Ukraine and Russia. <\/p>\n

\"\""The events in Georgia found us unprepared. A repeat in any other zone labeled as frozen conflict is possible. Presently, we have no mechanism for preventing such conflicts. Theoretically, a conflict can break out anytime in any of the regions where there are frozen conflicts,” Traian Basescu said. <\/p>\n

For his part, Viktor Yushchenko stressed that the war in Georgia started owing to the frozen conflict exiting in the region and the events in South Ossetia could repeat in other zones where there are such conflicts, such as Abkhazia and Transdniestria, if no preventive measures are taken. <\/p>\n

In Kiev, Traian Basescu and Viktor Yushchenko discussed for more than two hours, though the meeting was set to last 45 minutes. Afterward, Basescu came to Chisinau, where he had a meeting with Vladimir Voronin. <\/p>\n
