In the context of the military conflict in Georgia, the National Liberal Party (PNL) demands that the Government should review the national security strategy so as Moldova could join NATO as soon as possible. PNL also says that Moldova should withdraw from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in concert with Georgia and Ukraine. <\/p>\n

At a news conference on August 13, PNL vice president Anatol Taranu said that the events in Georgia arouse concerns in Moldova as the authorities in the breakaway region of Transdniestria could decide to follow the same scenario. <\/p>\n

”Russia, as in the case of the Transdniestrian conflict in Moldova, plays the role of principal international mediator and of main military peace force. Russia’s military aggression against Georgia discredits yet its status of international mediator in the frozen conflicts existing in the CIS. Also, Russia cannot claim to be a peace force in the given zones of conflict,” PLN leader Vitalia Pavlicenco said. <\/p>\n

PNL demands that the Government of Moldova organize an international conference with the participation of the US and the EU in order to modify the international mediation mechanism and the composition of the peacekeeping forces in the conflict zone so as to exclude Russia’s abuse and guarantee the impartiality of the mediators and peacekeeping forces. <\/p>\n

The party also says that the General Prosecutor’s Office should take legal action against the Transdniestrian authorities that sent volunteers to South Ossetia. <\/p>\n
