Moldova joints the French presidency of the European Union in its concerns over the aggravation of the situation in South Ossetia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration has announced. <\/p>\n

In a statement made at an extraordinary meeting of the OSCE Standing Council in Brussels on August 8, the French presidency of the European Union said that it is working to secure a ceasefire in South Ossetia, after Russian troops entered the breakaway region to repel a Georgian offensive. <\/p>\n

"The European Union, in liaison with all the protagonists, is working towards a ceasefire so as to avoid an extension of the conflict," it said. <\/p>\n

In Paris, the French foreign ministry appealed earlier Friday for an immediate end to fighting, as it reaffirmed France’s support for Georgia’s "territorial integrity". <\/p>\n

"France calls on all sides to immediately cease hostilities and to resume without delay negotiations, which are the only way to find a solution to this crisis," it said. <\/p>\n
