The leader of the breakaway Transnistrian republic Igor Smirnov considers that Moldova should become a confederation as part of the Russia-Belarus Union. Smirnov spoke about this at a recent meeting with the chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs and Relations with Compatriots Alexei Ostrovski. <\/p>\n

“The statements made by the Moldovan officials could be considered serious only when Moldova joins the Russia-Belarus Union, declares Russian as the second state language and changes its status of unitary state into confederation,” Smirnov said, making reference to Moldovan authorities’ intentions to solve the Transdniestrian conflict. <\/p>\n

For his part, the Russian MP said that even if 96% of Transdniestria’s population is in favor of sovereignty and independence, Russia understands that the major players, the United States and the European Union, are not ready to accept this independence. According to Ostrovski, the problem can be solved only by Chisinau and Tiraspol, with Russia and other countries playing the role of mediators. <\/p>\n

According to REPORTER.MD’s correspondent in Tiraspol, Smirnov said that the latest impetus given to the talks did not produce results. “We sent a document expressing our position to Moscow, but that was all of it. The groups of experts did not manage to agree on organizational issues, while the status of our representatives remained undefined,” Smirnov said. <\/p>\n

Speaking about the results of the meeting with Smirnov, Alexei Ostrovski said that he informed his interlocutor about Moscow’s position. “I recommended that Smirnov should examine the proposals discussed at the meeting with Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin. We consider that they have weight.
