The European Commission can announce the launch of the talks on the future cooperation document that will be signed by the EU and Moldova, given that the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement and the EU-Moldova Plan of Action have already expired. <\/p>\n

Such a statement was made by the European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner at a meeting with President Vladimir Voronin in Brussels on May 27. <\/p>\n

The European official said that the relations between Moldova and the EU have developed significantly and this offers the possibility of initiating the talks over a new legal framework. She also said the European Commission and Moldova will hold talks to discuss the content of the future agreement. <\/p>\n

“It is very important that all the positive reforms initiated in Moldova are continued,” Benita Ferrero-Waldner said, reiterating the necessity of paying increased attention to the reforms implemented in such areas as justice, police, combating of corruption and freedom of the media. <\/p>\n

For his part, the Moldovan president said that he shares the opinion of the European official as regards the importance of implementing the laws adopted under the EU-Moldova Action Plan, in accordance with the recommendations of the EU. Vladimir Voronin said that he will present a plan of measures for implementing these laws to the European Commission in Brussels. <\/p>\n

He stressed the necessity of continuing the reforms, especially in such areas as justice, combating of corruption and freedom of the media. <\/p>\n

In another connection, Vladimir Voronin thanked the European Commissioner for her agreement to organize a meeting of representatives of the European Commission and Moldova in Chisinau in July to discuss the content of the Moldova-EU agreement. <\/p>\n
