Poland and Sweden unveiled Monday plans to boost EU ties with eastern European nations like Ukraine, Georgia and Belarus, which could one day join the bloc, AFP reported. <\/p>\n

"An offer of more profound integration with the EU should be extended to all eastern partners. First and foremost Ukraine would benefit from this; others would follow according to ambition and performance," the proposal said. <\/p>\n

It would see an easing of visa policy with the countries — Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine — and the creation of a free trade area, based on trade agreements between each nation and EU countries. <\/p>\n

The plan, debated at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, was generally welcomed.
\n"It’s a welcome signal, for the countries … but also good for Europe," said Slovenian Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, whose country holds the EU’s rotating presidency, after chairing the talks. "The European Union is becoming a global player with very serious ideas," he said. <\/p>\n

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski denied that it was an effort to counter a French plan to boost ties with the EU’s Mediterranean neighbors, because the countries could actually join one day. "Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus — these are countries whose territories lie in Europe," he said. "They all have the right to join the bloc if they meet the criteria." <\/p>\n

The European Commission last week unveiled plans to raise the profile of relations with Mediterranean rim countries, including those in the Middle East, with a regular summit and ministerial meetings. It would see a new forum for ties launched in Paris on July 13-14. <\/p>\n

The move would revamp the creaking Barcelona Process, which was launched in 1995 as a framework for political, economic and social ties, but whose aims have often been thwarted by confrontations between Israel and Arab countries. Sikorski said that Poland and Sweden had similar aims, but played down any similarities with the French project. <\/p>\n

"We want to create something that would add value to existing mechanisms," he said, such as the so-called European Neighbourhood Policy governing cooperation with near non-EU nations.
\nHe said that Poland and Sweden want the EU to improve trade and streamline visa policy with those countries — Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. <\/p>\n
