The 6th ordinary congress of the ruling Moldovan Communist Party was held in Chisinau last Saturday. The forum adopted a new MCP Program and elected party’s governing organs. <\/p>\n

Opening the congress, the MCP Chairman and the President of the Republic of Moldova, Vladimir Voronin, said the day of March 15, 2008 “will become a turning point in the history of the party’s political development. Exactly today we must give a clear answer to the whole Moldovan society and our foreign allies about whether or not the Communist Party is able to win a third parliamentary electoral victory [with elections due in one year’s time], and if our party, absorbed in an exhausting governance routine, is able to make a new spurt and prove its strength, competitiveness and professionalism”. <\/p>\n

Voronin highlighted the importance of holding the congress in a pre-election year. He said the delegates would take stock of the MCP strength and consider political mechanisms to be used at the 2009 parliamentary elections. <\/p>\n

The congress was attended by 412 delegates from all regional party organizations that unite over 20,200 members, as it was said at the forum, by the majority parliamentary MCP faction, and practically by all members of the Moldovan Government. <\/p>\n

In his address to the forum, Vladimir Voronin welcomed esteemed guests – the representatives of European left parties, as well as Communists from Russia, Ukraine, China and Romania. The representatives of these latter countries made addresses to the congress delegates. <\/p>\n

The forum elected MCP governing organs, and re-elected Vladimir Voronin for a new chairmanship term. His candidature was unanimously supported by the delegates. Voronin thanked them for the high trust in him, and said their support assumes a greater significance with an account that their party leader also holds the post of the head of state. <\/p>\n

“Speculations about whether the MCP leader has the right to be President of the country are just useless. A president can’t act in the interests of the whole population unless he is backed by a powerful, disciplined and well-organized party. A political formation that nominates no candidate for the head of state cannot achieve any result”, stated Vladimir Voronin, adding that the Moldovan Communist Party “just must win the 2009 parliamentary elections – first and foremost for the Moldovan population’s sake”. <\/p>\n

The new MCP Central Committee has comprised 125 members. The MCP Executive Committee has been broadened up to 9 members. Along with old members elected at the previous congress – Vladimir Voronin, Mark Tkachuk, Grigore Petrenco, Vladimir Vitiuc and Svetlana Popa, the Executive Committee includes new members – Victor Mindru, Anatoly Zagorodny, Alexander Isayev, and Doina Rotari. <\/p>\n

At the same time, the congress abolished the institution of MCP Central Committee Secretaries, but introduced the post of an Executive Secretary, who will head the apparatus of the party.
