The Sectorul Botanica court of Chisinau will examine the case on annulment of the June 3, 2007 local election results in the Hincesti raion. Last Saturday, the court officially accepted the case for consideration. <\/p>\n

In June, the Communists won 16 mandates in the 35-member Hincesti Raion Council [local legislature], democrats received 18 seats, and an independent – 1. The eighteen democrats then united into a majority coalition. <\/p>\n

Now the Communists are maintaining the election returns must be annulled because democratic forces committed lots of violations during the campaign in the run-up to the local elections, and even on the voting day. So, some time ago, the Communists brought an action with the Hincesti raion court demanding to cancel the election results. But the local court decided to send the case over to the Botanica sector court in the capital city. <\/p>\n

Last Saturday, the two opposing sides exchange sharp remarks in the courthouse in the presence of Central Election Commission representatives. The democrats claimed the Communists would not resign themselves to the loss of power in that large and essential Moldovan raion, and are now putting all kind of impediments to the Council’s normal work. <\/p>\n

The Communists, in their turn, are claiming they only demand that the law be respected and observed. <\/p>\n

Earlier, the problem of possible election returns annulment in the Hincesti raion was debated in parliament. The opposition then indicated that bags with ballot-papers were kept at the Hincesti Raion Archive premises headed by a Communist, “so the Communists could well have a look into the bags”. <\/p>\n
