The Parliament amended the Electoral Code increasing the minimum threshold of representation to five per cent in the first reading approved within the Thursday meeting, on December 27, 2007. <\/p>\n

The bill was amended with the majority votes of the communist and Christian -democrat representatives increasing the threshold from 4% to 5%, although the majority requested an increase of six per cent. <\/p>\n

According to the communist MPs, if the threshold were kept at 4%, it would bring about a sudden soar of the number of political formations which would enter the Parliament, and these circumstances could bar the election of the president or of a coalition Government. <\/p>\n

The legislative initiative was criticized by the MPs who represent the opposition. They mentioned that the international organizations welcomed the actions of the Parliament in July, 2005, aiming to decrease the electoral threshold from 6% to 4%. <\/p>\n

Within the debates, President of the legal Commission for Appointments and Immunities Vladimir Turcan explained that the electoral threshold in most European countries is of 5%. <\/p>\n
