Moldova s status of member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which it obtained last 8 November, will help increase its credibility within this organization and ascertain itself on the international stage, the head of the UN direction in the Foreign and European Integration Ministry, Gheorghe Leuca, today told exclusively to MOLDPRES. <\/p>\n

Leuca said that it is for the first time since 1992, when Moldova joined the United Nations Organisation (UN), that it was elected in the UN Economic and Social Council. <\/p>\n

The source specified that the three-year mandate of member of the Council is a possibility for Moldova to promote its economic and social interests within ECOSOC and in financing programmes. Hence, Moldova could benefit from the extension of projects under implementation and from additional technical and financial assistance in the sectors of utmost importance, Leuca said. <\/p>\n

At the same time, Leuca highlighted that Moldova will contribute to examining and solving economic, social, cultural and humanitarian problems included on the UN agenda. Moldova s delegations are to participate in the Council s sessions and express our country s position of principle on issues of paramount importance for the world economy. <\/p>\n

Also, Moldova s representatives will involve in the elaboration of recommendations on this issue for the UN General Assembly, the UN member states and specialized agencies, Leuca said. <\/p>\n

Leuca stressed that in order to ensure Moldova s good participation in this UN body, there is being drafted an action plan providing for the Moldovan ministries full involvement in these actions. <\/p>\n

The UN Economic and Social Council is the main UN body tackling international economic and social problems. The council is made up of 54 UN member states elected in line with the principle of geographic position. The Council s meetings are held in New York and Geneva.
