The Republic of Moldova will ratify the Adapted Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE Treaty) after Russia fulfills its 1999 Istanbul commitments on withdrawal of forces for Moldova and Georgia. <\/p>\n

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that authorities’ appeals to refrain from unilateral actions made at the Extraordinary Conference of State Parties to the CFE Treaty that took place in Vienna between June 12 and 15 remained unheard. <\/p>\n

Yet, Moldova declares that it regards the CFE Treaty as an important guarantee of national security and is for its ratification. <\/p>\n

The statement also says that the signing of the Agreement on Adaptation of the CFE Treaty was “a logical step towards adjusting this international document to the existent situation, and the Republic of Moldova supports this process.” <\/p>\n

The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, widely known as the CFE Treaty, is one of the most far-reaching arms control, disarmament and confidence-building measures agreed, and is frequently referred to as "the cornerstone of European security." The CFE Treaty was signed in November 1990 and entered into force in 1992. It provides for significant cuts in the conventional military arsenals of NATO and former Warsaw Pact States. <\/p>\n

An Agreement on Adaptation of the CFE Treaty was signed by all States Parties in Istanbul in 1999. The Agreement on Adaptation provides for a system of national obligations with respect to the Treaty limited equipment instead of the former East-West group structure. In the original CFE Treaty, the two groups of States had collective limits within their own group. Now, the Adapted CFE Treaty establishes national ceilings and the territorial ceilings.
