Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu today had a meeting with Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic, the parliament’s press and image service has said. <\/p>\n

I consider that your visit will give new opportunities of developing the Moldovan-Slovak bilateral relations, Marian Lupu said at the outset of the meeting. In the context, he welcomed the Moldovan-Slovak business forum and the signing of the Moldovan-Slovak intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in combating organised crime and of the programme of cooperation between the Moldovan Export Promotion Organisation and the Slovak Agency for Investment and Trade Development. <\/p>\n

The speaker described as impressive the development of the bilateral economic relations over the last years and spoke out for extending the parliamentary dimension in this process. Lupu expressed gratitude to the Slovak National Council for willing to provide Moldova with technical assistance by ensuring training periods on parliamentary activity and European integration for the Moldovan parliament s public servants and lawmakers. In line with the previously reached agreements, in 2008, the Moldovan parliament speaker will pay a visit to Slovakia to set a high-level interparliamentary dialogue. Consistency of this dialogue will be backed by competent commissions and friendship groups. The Moldovan-Slovak friendship group is made up of 18 MPs. <\/p>\n

For his part, Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic pointed out the importance the legislative forum has in establishing priorities for developing the legal framework of state institutions. He deems it necessary that Moldova, in the context of its European bid, be able to foresee some legislative norms in order to be ready for integration, including their impact. <\/p>\n

Gasparovic said the EU accession conditions have to comply with the interests of states bidding for the EU. Slovakia is ready to give Moldova all support in order to be prepared for accession. It is due to its accession to the EU that Slovakia has become attractive to European investments and managed an impressive economic growth, which has positively impacted all population layers, Gasparovic said. He emphasised that from a political viewpoint, the continuity of the integration will of all Moldovan political forces is equally important. <\/p>\n

In the context, Lupu specified that Moldova does not run the risk of confrontation over this matter, because all parliamentary parties and the absolute majority of the extra-parliamentary political formations, as well as more than 70 per cent of the population, back the European integration actions. At the political level, we have a realistic approach and we perfectly realize that entering the European Union means not only advantages but also spending. The European Integration Declaration, the current parliament adopted two years ago, was not an abstract one. The European standards are political and social models viable regardless of circumstances. Hence there is no alternative to these models, and the sooner Moldova applies them the better we will be prepared for accession, Lupu said. <\/p>\n

With the Agreement on Partnership and Cooperation with the EU expiring in 2008, Moldova needs to be backed by the EU member states in order to work out a new document providing us with clear prospects for wangling the Autonomous Trade Preferences and for launching the procedures of entering into force the agreement on the facilitation of the issuance of visas and the one on readmission, the speaker said.
