The June 2007 local elections in Moldova are a crucial test of the country’s commitment to democratic reform and will be used by the international community as an indicator of progress toward democracy. Did Moldova pass the test? <\/p>\n

To help answer this question the National Endowment for Democracy, Eurasia Foundation and the Moldova Foundation organize a conference in Washington, DC with key members of the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections (“Coalition 2007”), a group representing over 60 NGOs dedicated to promoting an open and democratic electoral process in Moldova. From Moldova to Washington will travel Corina Cepoi, Andrei Brighidin and Liliana Vitu. The event is scheduled for June 27th at 10:00 AM. <\/p>\n

Under the auspices of “Coalition 2007,” the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) and the Association of Independent Press, represented by acting IJC Executive Director Corina Cepoi, monitored the election-related coverage of print and electronic media, as well as attempts by political actors to influence media coverage during the campaign. <\/p>\n

\"\"The Association of Legal Clinics (ALC), in partnership with the National Youth Council of Moldova, represented by ALC Director Andrei Brighidin, conducted nonpartisan voter education and mobilization campaigns throughout the country. These projects were part of a wider electoral initiative, which also included short- and long-term observation missions conducted by the League for the Defense of Human Rights of Moldova. <\/p>\n

Liliana Vitu, the Coalition 2007 Communications Officer and an employee of the Eurasia Foundation Moldova will also share her view if the elections process was open and democratic. <\/p>\n

The organizers invited David Kramer, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, to give the U.S. Government’s assessment on the elections process in Moldova. <\/p>\n

Other two American experts on Moldova who followed the way elections in Moldova were conducted – Ambassador William Hill, a former OSCE chief of mission to Moldova, who teaches now at Georgetown University, and Tammy Lynch from Boston University – will also address the audience in Washington, DC. <\/p>\n
