\nThe US Embassy in Moldova through a statement informed that the Tiraspol-subordinated militia of the un-recognized secessionist region of the Republic of Moldova turned away American diplomats, who were traveling in an embassy car, at the "border" between the Moldovan central government-controlled territory and the territory under the separatist authorities’ jurisdiction. <\/p>\n

Similar incidents have been registered before in violation of all international norms and conventions. The Transnistrian regime often stop representatives of international organizations and foreign diplomats at its arbitrary-installed check points, thus preventing them to enter the self-styled "Moldavian Transnistrian Republic" (MTR) that is backed by the Russian Federation. <\/p>\n

The US Embassy statement reads that this is the fifth time when US diplomats are turned away by the Transnistrian militia, therefore preventing American diplomats to conduct their routine activities in the Eastern part of Moldova controlled by Tiraspol. <\/p>\n

"We are outraged of the continuing obstructions that prevent us to conduct our activities normally", says the embassy communique. <\/p>\n

"This latest incident is no surprise," said John Todd Stewart, former U.S. ambassador to Moldova (1995-1998). "The ability of the Transnistrian regime to control its subjects is enhanced by their isolation from influences, like contacts with United States and European Union representatives, who can suggest alternatives to the repressive governance they have endured since 1992." <\/p>\n

This breakaway entity, the self-denominated Moldavian Transnistrian Republic (Russian name: Pridnestrovskaya Moldavskaya Respublika), referred to in many sources as Transnistria or Transdniestr — consists of a narrow strip of land (180 km by 32 km) nestled between the East bank of the Nistru River (Dniestr in Russian) and the border of Moldova with the Ukraine on a small part of what used to be, within Ukraine, between 1924 and 1940, the Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. Except for nine villages bordering the east bank of the river (Malovata Noua, Cocieri, Cosnita, Dorotcaia, Parata, Pohrebea, Roghi, Vasilevca, and Corjova), the area controlled by the Transnistrian regime includes all of Moldova’s land on the east bank of the Nistru. On the river’s west bank, the self-proclaimed MTR controls the city of Tighina. <\/p>\n

Some 1,250 Russian soldiers, as well as huge armaments and ammunition stockpiles, remain stationed in Moldova against the will of Government and people of Moldova. <\/p>\n
