In February of 1990, Moldova held its first democratic elections, which took place on the entire territory of Moldova. The deputies elected worked together successfully until June 23, 1990, when Moldova declared it was seceding from the USSR. This provoked fear in Moscow that Moldova would secede quickly, like the Baltic States. <\/p>\n
Transnistria declared its independence "within the confines of the USSR," and the conflict was a geopolitical one from the very beginning, Nantoi explained. Transnistria wasn’t and isn’t politically homogenous. On its 3,700 square kilometers live 550,000 people, 55% of whom are Moldovan citizens. Some seven thousands young people from Transnistria are students in Chisinau. Also, there are more ethnic Russians in Chisinau alone than in Transnistria. <\/p>\n
Why is the regime in Transnistria so stable if the conflict is ethnically driven? Oazu Nantoi, who is one of the most knowledgeable experts on the Transnistrian conflict, strongly believes that the answer is that the conflict is not ethnically driven, and in fact the regime in Tiraspol has three cornerstones:
\n1. Repressive nature – Transnistria is not a "de facto state" but a criminal regime, under which the people live in fear of the local "KGB."
\n2. The Transnistrian conflict is easier to settle than Abkhazia or Nagorno-Karabakh, and could become a successful precedent for such conflicts.
