On Wednesday night, the Central Election Commission rejected the petition lodged by the Liberal Party demanding to re-start the procedure of accepting applications from aspirants for the Chisinau Mayor post. <\/p>\n

The Liberal Party maintains that the Chisinau Constituency Electoral Board started the document acceptance procedure secretly. As a result, far from all political forces knew about the campaign onset. This means the Board began its activities from a gross violation of law-stipulated electoral procedures. <\/p>\n

However, the Chisinau Constituency Electoral Board declined the LP’s accusations, and stated that the local public was duly informed about the Board’s work commencement – by means of the Antena-C radio. <\/p>\n

Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu and his Deputy Dorin Chirtoaca, who is the LP candidate for Chisinau Mayor, stated the party disagrees with such a CEC decision, and will challenge it in court. <\/p>\n

In the country’s second largest city, Balti, opposition parties also stated similar violations in the document acceptance procedure. There, however, the Balti Constituency Electoral Board recognized the opposition’s claim as founded, and decided to begin the procedure from the very beginning. <\/p>\n

As of Wednesday night, the Chisinau Constituency Electoral Board had received applications from 10 aspirants wishing to be registered as candidates for the capital city mayor. Besides Chirtoaca, these are Acting Chisinau Mayor Veaceslav Iordan (representing the ruling Communist Party), Ion Mereuta of the Party of the Humanists, Leonid Bujor (Moldova Noastra Alliance), Vladimir Filat (Democratic Party), Valentin Krylov of the Patria-Rodina-Ravnopraviye [Equal Rights] voting bloc, Eduard Musuc of the Social Democratic Party of Moldova, Alexandru Corduneanu of the parliamentary Christian Democratic Popular Party, Zinovia Zorina of the Conservative Party, Corneliu Ciurea of the Social Liberal Party. <\/p>\n

The deadline for submitting applications is May 4. <\/p>\n

To date, the Central Election Commission has on its register 27 political parties and movements eligible to take part in the forthcoming elections.
