\nA former political prisoner of the secessionist Tiraspol regime and currently a Romanian senator Ilie Ilascu is convinced that ever since the Republic of Moldova’s independence, all its leaders, including the current ones, were and continue to be subordinate to Moscow. <\/p>\n

Ilascu stated over the ProTV-Chisinau channel Monday night, "Nothing has changed since 1992. All Moldovan senior officials obey to Moscow, coordinating each their step with it… Russia fully controls situation in Transnistria. It was Russia who initiated a war in Transnistria, and suspended it for the time being". <\/p>\n

"The war is not over yet. What we have there is just an armistice, and all negotiations is but a play by Russia", believes the Romanian senator. <\/p>\n

Ilascu, who spent 9 years in a Tiraspol jail on charges of committing terror acts during the 1992 armed conflict in Transnistria, stated over the PRO-TV that he was released upon an agreement reached between the Council of Europe and Russia. He expressed gratitude to the Council of Europe and President of France Jacque Chirac for their pressing on Moscow in 2001, which led to his liberation. <\/p>\n

Touching on Moldo-Romanian relations, Ilascu named the present-day situation as "pitiful", adding, "This coolness does not apply to citizens, for it has emerged by initiative of the Moldovan authorities that continue acting as Moscow tells them. The current authorities’ position is dual – one in the external policy and the other in the domestic one". <\/p>\n

In his words, the political class in Romania has already turned indifferent to the problem of accession of Bessarabia to Romania: "Yes the elderly still think about Bessarabia, while the young generation has different priorities and interests". <\/p>\n

The senator spoke for revising the Romanian legislation and for simplifying the procedure of granting the Romanian citizenship to nationals of the Republic of Moldova.
