The administration of Bender (located on the right bank but subordinated to Transnistria) has demanded that Moldovan police be withdrawn from the city. <\/p>\n

The issue was raised on Tuesday during the meeting of the Join Control Commission. The city administration claims that Moldovan police presence undermines stability in Bender. <\/p>\n

According to one of the JCC members Ion Leahu, the final decision on this is yet to be taken. <\/p>\n

‘The arguments produced by the city administration are political and ill justified. The Bender authorities are trying to get the city under their control and therefore press for withdrawal of Moldovan police, for which purpose the local prison has already been disconnected from water and electricity supply,’ said Leahu. <\/p>\n

The attempts to find an effective solution to this problem have been made since the end of the armed conflict of 1992. One of the possible options currently under consideration is the creation of a Joint Coordination Center for law enforcement agencies attached to Benderi military commandant’s office. Under this scenario, Moldovan police unit could be based outside Benderi in the village of Varnita, administratively subordinated to Chisinau. <\/p>\n
