Moldova’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Alexei Tulbure, on 16 February 2007, was elected as chairman of the UN Commission for Social Development for the 46th session. <\/p>\n

According to a communique made available to MOLDPRES by the Moldovan permanent representative to the UN, the event took place at the end of the 45th session of the UN Commission for Social Development, which was conducted at the UN headquarters in New York on 7-16 February 2007. <\/p>\n

It is for the first time ever in the UN history that this position is held by Moldova’s representative, and this will provide new opportunities of promoting Moldova’s positive image on the international stage, according to the source. <\/p>\n

At the 45th session of the UN Commission for Social Development, the Moldovan government was represented by the Moldovan Permanent Mission to the UN. On 12 February 2007, the mission’s representative delivered a speech on one of the topics included in the meeting’s agenda – Promoting Employment and Ensuring Decent Jobs for Everybody. <\/p>\n

The Commission for Social Development is one of the basic commissions of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and it is made up of 46 members elected by the ECOSOC. Starting with the 1995 world summit for Social Development in Copenhagen, the commission has become one of the UN main bodies, charged with implementing the summit’s decisions (Declaration and Programme of Action). <\/p>\n
