Moldovan Speaker Marian Lupu has had a Chisinau meeting with a delegation of the France – Moldova friendship group of the French National Assembly, according to the parliament’s press and image service. <\/p>\n

"Moldova appreciates France as a strategic partner and a friend-country. We pay a special attention to the Moldovan-French bilateral cooperation and development of the economic, social and cultural relations between our states. We are willing to strengthen an open and sincere dialogue between our countries and to promote a set of concrete and very practical actions in order to intensify the bilateral relations, including on the interparliamentary dimension", Lupu said. <\/p>\n

For his part, the chairman of the friendship group, Loic Bouvard, affirmed that France also wants to enlarge and strengthen the strategic relations with Moldova, especially stressing the parliament’s important role in this respect. The French MP described as extremely important the Moldovan speaker’s visit to Paris in autumn 2006. <\/p>\n

Lupu reiterated Moldova’s European integration aspirations, stressing that the country started a complex process of democratic reforms in line with the European standards. Namely, the speaker highlighted the systemic approach in the reformation process of justice, local public administration, security and information service, election system and legislation on financing political parties. <\/p>\n

"The parliament fully committed to carry out fundamental transformations aimed at a good operation of the society’s democratic institutions. We are aware of the enormous work which is to be fulfilled, but our commitment to the European project is serious, and it aims at taking over the European model of economic and social development", the speaker also said. <\/p>\n

Lupu called for France’s support to obtain a new juridical agreement between Moldova and the European Union once the agreement on partnership and cooperation expires in 2008. He particularly spoke for a new trade agreement, and mainly the negotiation of the Autonomous Trade Preferences and facilitation of the visa regime for the Moldovan citizens. <\/p>\n

The officials also debated aspects related to Moldova’s cooperation with the Council of Europe. The French delegation stressed that it will back Moldova within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, including to help it shift from the CE’s monitoring stage to the post monitoring one. <\/p>\n

"Moldova is a country of European culture. Moldova is situated in Europe," the French MPs also said. <\/p>\n

The sides also welcomed French Speaker Christian Poncelet’s visit to Moldova planned for April 2007. <\/p>\n
