Romania indents to explain, support and find support inside the European Union for Moldova to return in Europe which it left in 1940 without its will, stated Romanian President Traian Basesescu in his speech in the European Parliament. <\/p>\n

Basescu, acocrding to the Romanian Presidency press service, stated that "both Romanian and Moldovan populations have the same history, speak the same language; they share the same culture, the same traditions and European aspirations. Certainly, it is Romania’s and Romanians’ moral and political obligation to fight for our families to the east of Prut river so that they return home, in Europe". <\/p>\n

Romanian president also said that the European perspective provided to the Republic of Moldova should be similar to the one for the Western Balkans. He promised that his country will contribute to the EU’s stronger affirmation as global actor, "particular there where it can bring about real added value, especially in the relations with the Western Balkans and eastern neighborhood of the European Union". <\/p>\n

According to him, another zone Romania’s attention focuses more and more is the Black Sea region, given that this is not only a zone with great prospects, but also with multiple risks and challenges. Basescu says that the extended Black Sea region offers many of the possible answers to the great questions related to European and global energy security. <\/p>\n

"We want to empower the region with tools and mechanisms to control any kind of illegal trafficking, to combat terrorism and proliferation of mass destroying arms. We want that year 2007 brings about real progress in settling different frozen conflicts in the region and we are opened to a dialogue with any partner that can contribute to this. We will support EU’s involvement in the process of settling frozen conflicts, including under the umbrella of the European Security and Defense Policy. We hope that together with the neighbor countries we will transform this region into a model of peaceful cohabitation", added Basescu. <\/p>\n

Romanian president affirms that Bucharest wants to further be an active contributor to strengthening of international security. <\/p>\n

Within a press conference held by Basescu and Speaker of the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Poettering, the head of Romanian state stated that Romania’s position towards the Republic of Moldova is to support its getting-closer to the EU, being very well aware that the Union’s priority number one is the adoption of the Constitutional Treaty and internal consolidation. <\/p>\n
