Two Romanian Consulates will be temporarily opened in Balti and Cahul to facilitate the process of visa issuance to enter on the territory of the neighbor country. The decision approved in the Tuesday meeting between President Vladimir Voronin and his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu, who arrived in a visit to Chisinau. <\/p>\n

The announcement was made by the two presidents after their meeting today. Basescu mentioned that the two consulates will be opened as soon as possible, maybe even in a week time. <\/p>\n

Romanian president also announced that his visit is taking place just before his discourse on foreign policy he is to present on January 19, and that he came to Chisinau to get consultations in connection with certain issues related to this subject. In his turn, President Vladimir Voronin stated that two years ago Basescu’s visit to Moldova during parliamentary election campaign was followed by a victory. "We hope that after this visit we win even more than in 2005", Voronin noted. <\/p>\n

The two presidents also focused on joint projects financed by the EU under the Neighborhood Policy. They decided to establish joint working groups together with Ukraine at the level of ministries to develop projects in the sphere of infrastructure, environment, culture, and education. <\/p>\n

They also discussed the Transnistrian issue, in particular from the perspective of settling the conflict in Serbia. President Vladimir Voronin said EU’s opinion regarding the conflict between Serbia and Kosovo is interesting, first of all, from the perspective that it might influence the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. Traian Basescu stated that the way the Serbian conflict will be settled is important as regards not allowing for cases. He underlined that all conflicts in Europe should be settled based on fundamental principles such as territorial integration, border inviolability, and non-granting of collective rights to national minorities. <\/p>\n

Referring to the border agreement between Moldova and Romania, Moldovan president announced that the two countries are successors of a border agreement signed as early as in the soviet period and that it is to be confirmed. He also referred to the political agreement, saying that it might be signed soon. In his turn, Romanian president stated that the negotiations over the document are to be finalized. "Romania has delimitated its borders since 1947. The problem is the way in which it will be further crossed. It is necessary that citizens be able to cross easily the border", Basescu stressed. <\/p>\n

Another issue they focused on was that concerning the citizenship. Traian Basescu stated that the citizens of both countries have the right to chose, and Moldovan and Romanian laws allow for a double citizenship. He communicated that the law on citizenship is going to be amended, and its amendments will be discussed with Chisinau officials. Basescu noted that priority will be given to students and graduates of Romanian education institutions. According to Basescu, currently there are around 530 thousand Romanian citizenship applications submitted by Moldovans. <\/p>\n

Romanian president also spoke about the Chisinau’s consent for Romania to promote the idea of putting Moldova among the Western Balkan countries, which got closest to the EU in the process of preparing for accession. <\/p>\n
