The Republic of Moldova may take part in the next round of NATO enlargement negotiations due soon, German Minister of Foreign Affairs Frank-Walter Steinmeier stated in Berlin last Friday after his meeting with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. <\/p>\n

According to the DDP news agency of Germany, the sides highlighted that NATO remains open to new members wishing to join it, and discussed the perspectives of the Organization’s further enlargement. Among potential candidates for membership, they mentioned not only western Balkan countries but also Ukraine and Georgia, although, "this is not an automatic development of events in that direction", as Jaap de Hoop Scheffer stressed. <\/p>\n

Frank-Walter Steinmeier reaffirmed Germany’s openness to a new round of talks on NATO enlargement. He said Moldova, too, may become a party to this process, and stressed this can be decided upon only in 2006, whereas new NATO members may be approved no earlier than in 2008. <\/p>\n

By Constitution, the Republic of Moldova is a neutral state that may not participate in whatever military blocks. Since 1994, Moldova has been cooperating with the North Atlantic Alliance only in the framework of the NATO Partnership for Peace Program.
