The voter turnout was slightly over 62%, or approximately as at the first round of the elections on December 3. The voter registers in Gagauzia comprised 83 thousand names. <\/p>\n<p>Formuzal and Dudoglo are the Heads of Gagauzia&#8217;s two main raions &#8211; Chadyr-Lunga and Comrat. In the first round, they polled 33% and 32%, respectively, and that was the biggest sensation of the elections, because both of them received more ballots than t<img decoding=\"async\" height=\"145\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.moldova.org\/politicom\/2005\/iulie\/formuzal.jpg\" width=\"145\" align=\"right\" \/>he incumbent Bashkan [governor] of Gagauzia &#8211; George Tabunshik, who was running as an independent candidate &#8211; de jure, but was massively supported de facto by the ruling Moldovan Communist Party. Despite all the backing by Chisinau and the notorious administrative resource that was in his hands, Tabunshik received only 24% ballots, and thus failed to get to the second round. <\/p>\n<p>The Gagauzia autonomy was founded by decision of the Moldovan Parliament in December 1994 for the sake of solving the so-called &quot;Gagauz question&quot;. The emergence of that autonomy became a good example of the peaceful settlement of a conflict in the former Soviet Union area, and permitted to put an end to the self-proclaimed Gagauzian Republic that was created in the early 1990s in southern Moldova.
