Parliament’s Standing Bureau rejected the initiative of non-affiliated MP Anatol Taranu to give a political and legal appreciation to the 1946-1947 famine in Moldova motivating it with the lack of an "objective fact base". <\/p>\n

This topic raised passionate discussions in the Legislature’s plenum on Thursday, where four statements on this matter were made in the end. <\/p>\n

The author of the initiative was discontent about the answer he got to his request. According to him, the argument is a pertinent one. He said there is clear evidence that attest the existence of the famine over that period, and it’s a fact that it emerged as a result of the premeditated policy promoted by the Stalinist regime. The MP believes that the Parliament does not want to adopt a declaration in this regard because it would be "a blow for the ruling party, given that their (ideological) ancestors where the ones who organized that horrible crime, the ethnical genocide against the population of Moldova". "Even with the risk to damage certain interests, we should provide an appreciation of those events, the way other states have already done it", added Taranu. <\/p>\n

"The refusal of the majority faction to set up a parliamentary committee to look at the 1946-1947 organized famine and take an attitude is a blasphemy towards the victims of those years", said Ion Varta, Christian Democrat Popular Party. <\/p>\n

Leonid Bujor, Our Moldova MP, believes that "this action is a logical one and follows the refusal of the ruling party to condemn totalitarian regimes when entire Europe had already done this". <\/p>\n

According to Victor Stepaniuc, Communist Party MP, "it’s obvious that in 1946-1947, Moldova’s population was subject to famine, but this has a pragmatic explanation historically demonstrated: the difficult post-war period, the poor crops, and the drought". We cannot speak about an "organized famine", the cited source emphasized. "Indeed, Stalinist system has is share of fault in this process, in that he didn’t react on time", the MP concluded. <\/p>\n
