Chisinau (dpa) – Senior officials in Moldova’s government were jubilant on Wednesday after announcement of a massive 1.2 billion dollar aid package from the European Union and international loan institutions. <\/p>\n

Most of the funding will go to Moldova from 2007 – 2009 as part of an EU programme aimed at reducing destitution in adjacent countries. The EU’s eastern border will reach Moldova on January 1 2007, when Romania joins the EU. <\/p>\n

The 1.2 billion dollars in grants and loans is some four times larger than any aid package ever received Moldova since it became an independent country in 1991. The sum also is more than twice the size of the Moldova government annual national budget. <\/p>\n

"This is a historic moment for Moldova," said Vasily Tarlev, Moldova Foreign Minister. "This exceeds anything we have seen, from any foreign agency, for the last fifteen years." <\/p>\n

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank will provide part of the funds, according to the report. <\/p>\n

The money will go towards reform of Moldova’s judicial system, regional government, education, public health, energy and transport infrastructure, small business, and agriculture, Tarlev said. <\/p>\n

Moldova is by most standards the poorest country in Europe. Its economy is based on exports of fruits and wine, and on money sent home by Moldovans working abroad. <\/p>\n

Up to one-third of Moldova’s working-age population is employed outside the country, frequently as illegal migrant labourers in Europe, Moldovan officials have said. <\/p>\n

A key focus of the aid package will be job creation in Moldova, Tarlev said. <\/p>\n

Tarlev credited the success to "relations based on friendship and trust in the spheres of politics and finance" established between the EU and Moldova in recent years. <\/p>\n
