Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin considers combating corruption to be priority task for the Moldovan leadership and society on the whole. He said it on Saturday at a national research-practical ‘Progress and Prospects in Combating Corruption conference. The conference was organized by the Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption, the Ministry of Interior, Minister of Justice and the Transparency International monitoring group. <\/p>\n

From 2001, when the Party of Communists came to power, one of main objectives of their program were concrete programs and actions on opposing corruption. Vladimir Voronin underlined combating corruption is now a priority principle not only for Moldova’s leadership, but also for the entire society. <\/p>\n

According to him, combating corruption proceed in Moldova with variable success. <\/p>\n

"There are two problems, which call for close attention on the part of law and order authorities – money laundering and tax evasion. There are cases of lobbying interests of certain economic groups both on the part of the Parliamentarians and some leaders of state institutions", the President said. <\/p>\n

He added many former leaders of state institution deserved punishment, as there were involved in corruption directly or indirectly. <\/p>\n

"The broadcasting on air of plenary parliamentary sittings was resumed in order to make the activities of central public bodies transparent. However, when a parliamentary microphone is used for lobbying somebody’s personal interests and some parliamentarians are paid for it, the situation disturbs", Voronin said. <\/p>\n

He remarked corruption penetrated into a number of state institutions. <\/p>\n

"Some of them are used to carry out public opinion polls with the resulted anticipated beforehand", the President said. Chairman of the parliamentary standing committee for National Security, Defense and Public Order Iurie Stoicov remarked an interference by the Information and Security Service is needed to reveal such cases, as this institution has all necessary powers. <\/p>\n

Director of the Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption Valentin Mejinskii recalled that at the end of 2004 Moldova put the task to take decisive steps to eradicate corruption. In this connection the Parliament approved the National Strategy for Preventing and Combating Corruption and the Action Plan for its Implementation. <\/p>\n

"Thus, the center is to play an important role in the current implementation of this plan, this body performs also the role of the Secretariat of the Group for the Monitoring of the Strategy Implementation. The rating of the countries for preventing and combating corruption, made up yearly by Transparency International, underscores Moldova’s progress in this field, a jump onto the 22nd place in this classification.
