The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) will discuss the case of Moldova in February 2007, when it will analyse the progresses achieved by Chisinau in implementing the commitments toward the Council of Europe (CoE). <\/p>\n

Moldovan Speaker Marian Lupu and PACE President Rene van der Linden and CoE Secretary-General Terry Davis have discussed this issue in Strasbourg. Lupu proposed the drafting of a joint report by PACE corapporteurs and Moldovan experts concerning the progresses achieved in implementing the commitments of Moldova. Technical details about the process of drafting of the joint report will be discussed with PACE corapporteurs for Moldova Josette Durrieu and Egidijus Vareikis. <\/p>\n

In the context, the Moldovan speaker assured that the Chisinau parliament will execute its action programme by the end of this year. He promised to monitor the implementation of laws included in this programme and the adjustment of national legislation to European laws will continue in 2007. The action programme was approved last year and includes the main laws that Moldova pledged to adopt when it joined the CoE in 1995. <\/p>\n

\"\"Lupu promised to CoE officials that the "anti-corruption expertise" of legislation will be a mandatory element of parliamentary activity. <\/p>\n

"The reform implementation process has already started and I think that it goes the right way," Lupu underlined. In turn, PACE President Rene van der Linden welcomed the latest progresses achieved by Moldovan parliament, highlighting especially the importance of adopting and implementing the draft laws. The European parliamentarian indicated the civil society, mass media, judicial system and penitentiary system as key fields in this respect. <\/p>\n

According to the parliamentary press service, CoE Secretary-General Terry Davis has also appreciated the positive progresses in implementing the legislative action programme. He reconfirmed the support for Moldova’s official stance regarding the Transnistrian problem. "Do not hesitate to ask our support anytime when you need it in the Transnistrian settlement process," he said at the end of the meeting. <\/p>\n

Speaker Lupu is on a working visit to the PACE in Strasbourg on October 1-4.
