Moldovan Parliament Chairman Marian Lupu expressed gratitude to the International Francophone Organization’s member states for their backing Moldova’ efforts to solve the Transnistria problem. <\/p>\n

The Speaker addressed the IX Francophone Summit, which is completing its work in Bucharest today, and pointed out, in particular, that the francophone movement and the Organization have lately become stronger and more consistent. In the new conditions of globalization, he said, the declared reform of the Organization will ensure its conversion into an efficient mechanism of promoting the francophone movement’s values – humanism, peoples’ solidarity, development of democracy and free elections, peace consolidation, human rights protection. <\/p>\n

Moldova has supported the course for modernization of the Organization fixed in the new Francophone Charter, and the Speaker said, "My country had a possibility to feel the Organization’s effectiveness. Its mission, delegated to Moldova to observe the [2005] parliamentary elections, played a particular role in ensuring a free and transparent expression of citizens’ will. Moreover, the Organization’s recommendations turned out to be the most valuable ones". <\/p>\n

Marian Lupu backed the initiative by Romanian President Traian Basescu to establish European Francophone University, which may well become a center where all studies for receiving the doctor’s degree in the French language could be concentrated. Lupu expressed hope the francophone states will vote for the candidature of Moldova for hosting the XIV Francophone Summit in 2012. <\/p>\n

In Bucharest, Marian Lupu met President Traian Basescu and Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Razvan-Unghureanu, and conveyed congratulations on the decision on admission Romania to the European Union from January 1, 2007. <\/p>\n

Lupu also had meetings with International Francophone Organization Secretary General Abdou Diouf, French President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister of Canada Stephen Harper, and European Commission Chairman Jose Manuel Durao Barroso. <\/p>\n

The Romanian mass media criticized Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin for his absence from the Summit. Voronin changed his mind at the last moment, stating he could not go to Bucharest.
