An international seminar, Ways to Democratise the Transnistrian Region, is held in Chisinau. The organizers of the event are the Czech Foreign Ministry in partnership with the Institute of Public Policies (IPP) and the national centre of assistance and information for non-governmental Organisation, Contact. <\/p>\n

Speaker Marian Lupu welcomed the participants in the seminar. Lupu said he appreciates the EU’s support and the active involvement in the identification of ways to peacefully settle the Transnistrian conflict. "The initiative of our Czech partners to bring into discussion subjects related to the democratisation of Moldova’s Transnistrian region comes to confirm once again the need in a multidimensional approach to this complex problem", Lupu said. <\/p>\n

He expressed conviction that holding free and democratic elections in the Transnistrian region can be possible only after the commitments of the 1999 Istanbul summit are met, after the armed formations in the region are demilitarised, and, after the democratic values’ repression system is dismantled. <\/p>\n

"In the context of starting a process of the Transnistrian region’s democratisation, it is necessary to develop a politics-free associative sector, and to back the joint civic initiatives put forward by non-governmental organisations from the two banks of Dniestre in order to edify a reintegrated civil society, based on common values and principles. The international donors’ support at this level is more than welcome", Marian Lupu concluded. <\/p>\n

The organizers’ goal is to propose for debates the current situation in Transnistria from the perspective of the local population. Officials from Dubasari and Tighina (Bender) were invited to the talks. <\/p>\n

Czech Ambassador to Moldova Petr Kypr said the participants in the debates have to answer the question "what can we do so that the local population lives decently and freely".
