The Patriotic Party of Transnistria has nominated incumbent Transnistria president Igor Smirnov as a presidential candidate for the elections due on December 10. Such was the decision passed unanimously at the party’s congress held last Saturday. <\/p>\n

Party leader Oleg Smirnov, the Transnistrian leader’s younger son, stated from the congress rostrum that at the present time there exists no worthy alternative to the candidature of Igor Smirnov’s for the presidency. <\/p>\n

"He has proved in deeds that he is a genuine patriot of Transnistria. Our organization shall be taking an active part in the region’s political life, including in elections. But at the moment, we cannot see an alternative to Igor Smirnov. He stood at the cradle of the Transnistrian Republic, was together with its people in times of hardships, so he is supposed to bring to the end the cause he has started, and must fulfill the Transnistrians’ will expressed at the independence referendum of September 17", stated the son. <\/p>\n

In his words, an absolute majority of the Transnistrian residents [97%] voted for the region’s independence from Moldova and for integration with Russia, so "this is the voters’ direct mandate to the incumbent president. To fulfill it, Smirnov has to be elected president for another term of office". <\/p>\n

All the 260 congress delegates voted for Smirnov’s nomination as candidate. The forum issued an address to all public organizations in the region to back the candidacy of Igor Smirnov, discussed the establishment of pre-election canvassing headquarters, and decided to set up party’s youth organization. <\/p>\n

The Patriotic Party of Transnistria was founded on August 4, 2006. Its program says the party’s chief objectives are the ensuring of equal possibilities to all citizens, development of Transnistria as an independent and sovereign state with orientation to the Russian Federation, social protection of party members and their families. <\/p>\n

Igor Smirnov will mark his 65th birthday anniversary next month. He is the first and, so far, the only leader of the secessionist region, having won presidential elections in 1991, 1996, and 2001. The constitution of Transnistria has no restrictions to presidency duration. Besides, Smirnov is the head of the Transnistrian government, so his power is in fact unlimited. His candidature for a new presidency has already been proposed by the workers of several major industrial enterprises in the region.
