The OSCE Permanent Council has condemned the referendum in Transnistria, where on September 17 the majority of its participants spoke out for Transnistria’s independence and its integration with Russia. <\/p>\n

According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, at a sitting of the OSCE Permanent Council on Thursday the European Union and the states- candidates for the EU membership, the USA the GUAM countries, as well as OSCE Acting Chairman reiterated their stance that the "referendum" and its results cannot be recognized in any form. <\/p>\n

The EU underlined that the so-called referendum confronts with the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, which is internationally recognized, and the situation in the Transnistrian region does not correspond to the standards of the population’s free will expression. <\/p>\n

Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and all the Balkan states supported the European Union, which called upon all the sides to resume talks in the "5+2" format for achieving the quick and transparent decision on the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. <\/p>\n

\"\"The United States remarked that the Transnistrian region is a part of the Republic of Moldova and the so-called referendum can be considered nothing else, but an attempt to destabilize the situation in the region. The United States also said that the Transnistrian conflict can be settled under the condition of guaranteeing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova. <\/p>\n

The United States reminded the Russian Federation of its pledge to withdraw completely its ammunition, weaponry and armed forces from Moldova’s territory on the basis of its commitments, undertaken at the OSCE Istanbul Summit in 1999. The United States also demanded from the Russian Government to immediately inform the Transnistrian administration of its non-recognition of any Transnistria’s claims on independence or Russia’s annexation of the Transnistrian region, a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration says. <\/p>\n

It also remarks that the GUAM states severely condemned unilateral actions by the Transnistrian separatist regime and underlined that the so-called referendum confronts with the international rules and will not be recognized. <\/p>\n

"The GUAM countries reiterated their firm commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and called upon the Tiraspol regime to resume talks in the "5+2" format", the statement underlines. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan Government’s statement of September 18, 2006 on the "referendum" was presented at the sitting.
