Three factions of the Russian parliament demand the start of the diplomatic procedure of recognition of independence of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian Moldovan Republic. <\/p>\n

They have worked out a draft for the Russian president in which they seek the recognition of the separatist region and the joining to the Russian Federation. <\/p>\n

The Chisinau authorities did not comment so far on the initiative that Russian parliamentarians launched at the Wednesday plenary sitting of the State Duma. According to Russian press reports, the draft was tabled by factions representing the parties Rodina, Narodnaya Volya and the Democratic Liberal Party headed by Deputy Speaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky. <\/p>\n

The latter demanded that "Moscow respect the desire that Transnistria’s residents have clearly expressed at the referendum." He demanded the opening of a direct air connection between Moscow and Tiraspol and the inauguration of a Russian consulate in the Transnistrian region. Earlier, Russian officials have raised such claims but the constitutional authorities of Moldova turned them down. <\/p>\n

At the same time, Russia has opened a "documentation centre" in the Transnistrian region to issue the acts needed for the Russian citizenship and other consular services. According to knowledgeable sources, Chisinau has sent a protest note to Russia and notified the international organisations about this situation. But officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration did not confirm this report. <\/p>\n

The major faction in the Russian Duma, Yedinaya Rossia, did not comment on the draft tabled on Wednesday.
