More than 78% of voters participated in the referendum on Transnistria’s independence and the development of relations with Moldova and Russia, which took place in the unrecognized Transnistrian republic, Chairman of the Transnistrian Central Electoral Commission Piotr Denisenko advised Monday morning. <\/p>\n

According to him, 262 polling stations, including 52 in Tiraspol, were opened in Transnistria for the referendum. The electoral slates included 389 thousand citizens having the voting right. The polling stations were opened from 7 o’clock A.M. to 8 o’clock P.M <\/p>\n

Denisenko remarked that the voting was arranged in special cabins and voting boxes were transparent. Besides, the ballots have five protection degrees. <\/p>\n

According to Chairman of the Transnistrian Central Electoral Commission, more than 170 experts from Russia, Moldova, Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, Kyrgyzia, Ukraine and Kosovo were observing the referendum on Transnistria’s independence. <\/p>\n

"The British-Helsinki Group for Human Rights, representatives of Southern Ossetia, Abkhazia, Gagauzia, two non-governmental organizations from Moldova, 12 representatives of the United States, Great Britain and France under the auspices of the Russian CEC, representatives of Natalia Vitrenko’s Progressive Socialist Party and Victor Yanukovich’s Party of Regions were observing the referendum", Denisenko said. <\/p>\n

The main part on the observers were representatives of Russian non-governmental organizations and of the Russian State Duma, including the notorious CIS-EMO group of Russian independent observers, headed by Aleksei Kochetkov and activists of the "Nashi" (our people) movement who arranged a tent camp on the Suvorov square in Tiraspol on the eve of the referendum. <\/p>\n

The Infotag reporters who were in Transnistria on the Election Day were convinced that the voters’ activity was very high. There were queues of several persons at some polling stations, though the electoral commissions were working quickly. People were willing to give interviews to the reporters where they spoke out confidence that the referendum would give Transnistria a chance to join Russia, to receive security guarantees and to improve the life. Alongside with it, they advocated good neighborly relations with Moldova. <\/p>\n

On the eve and on the referendum day strengthened security measures were taken in Transnistria. The day-and-night patrolling of the streets by foot and mobile militia groups were organized, the border guard was strengthened, thorough customs examination were being carried on by the customs. To provide for maximal security and the maximal activity all the markets were closed and the number of mass actions was reduced in Tiraspol. The travel by all public transport means was free on the voting day. <\/p>\n

Strengthened teams of employees of the law enforcement bodies were on duty in Tiraspol. They were checking territories near the polling stations and examined the documents of citizens who seemed suspicious to them. <\/p>\n

Militiamen and employees of the Ministry of State Security were on duty at each polling station. In some cases they were at a distance of 20-50 meters from the stations, on other cases – directly in the building where polling station were. An employee of the Ministry of Interior examined thoroughly documents at the entrance to the Palace of the Republic in the center of Tiraspol where Igor Smirnov and other Transnistrian leaders voted. <\/p>\n

All the day long the Transnistrian radio was calling upon the citizens to take an active part in the referendum. Refreshment counters functioned at polling stations. They were selling foodstuffs, but there were no alcoholic drinks. Music was playing at each station and the radio called for taking part in the voting. When the voters asked to explain the voting procedure, in many cases the members of electoral commission said that they should answer "YES" to the first question and "NO" to the second one. <\/p>\n
