"The conductance on September 17 by the unrecognized Tiraspol regime of a farce named a referendum on the international recognition of the so-called Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, and the appeals to include that territory into Russia are an illicit and unacceptable act", believe Moldovan non-governmental organizations. <\/p>\n

Today, the Association for Democracy, Education and Reforms, the Causeni Regional Legal Center, Association for Civil and Political Culture in Moldova, the CAPTES Center for Awareness, Education and Social Analysis, Association "United European Moldova", and Europa Nova Movement issued an Appeal to the international community, the mass media and population of the Republic of Moldova, including its Transnistrian region, in which the NGOs wrote that the September 17 referendum is targeted at misleading the public and thus at keeping the Smirnov Antiufeyev group at power as long as only possible. <\/p>\n

"The referendum results cannot be recognized as valid, because they will fail to reflect the population’s real aspirations for as long as the regime remains under the totalitarian regime’s rule in conditions when there exist no independent mass media, or opposition, or civil society", the document said.

\nThe Appeal authors drew attention to the financial backing the Tiraspol regime receives from Russia, including for this referendum. The NGOs expressed indignation over such Russia’s interference into Moldova’s domestic affairs. They wrote, "the international community ought to take urgent measures and to demand from the Russian Federation to observe its international commitments, as well as to condemn the violation of human rights and freedoms by the Tiraspol regime". <\/p>\n

The organizations called upon the Transnistrians to not yield to the separatist regime’s lies, and to abstain from partaking in the non-constitutional, illegal referendum. The document is open to signing by other Moldovan non-governmental organizations.
