Last Saturday, the residents of Transnistria celebrated the 16th anniversary of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (PMR). <\/p>\n

Traditionally, the event was marked with a big meeting in the capital town’s central square and with a military parade, with the salute taken by the president of the self-styled republic Igor Smirnov, Chairman of the Transnistrian supreme soviet [parliament] Yevgeny Shevchook, local ministers as well as foreign guests – parliamentarians from the Russian State Duma Sergei Baburin and Olga Seliverstova, a delegation from Abkhazia led by parliament chairman Nugzar Ashuba, and a governmental delegation from South Ossetia headed by minister of culture Kosta Puhayev. <\/p>\n

Addressing the big rally, president Smirnov said, "The acquiring of statehood by Transnistria played a great role in the development of our country and its people. A political system has been created here, and a just and open society built. In a complicated and rapidly changing political and economic situation, we have managed to work out our own development strategy. Its consistent realization enabled us to face many ordeals with dignity, to bear up against the blows by the aggressive Moldova, and to do everything possible to protect citizens from the impacts of those blows". <\/p>\n

In his words, the PMR’s 16th year was one of the hardest politically and economically: "We had to withstand the unprecedented economic blockade imposed on us by Moldova backed by Ukraine, and unending provocations by the official Chisinau, and political pressure by the West staged with Chisinau’s assistance". <\/p>\n

All this, he said, has brought Transnistria to a point when the region has at last to make its final decision concerning its further destiny, "and on September 17 you will have the possibility to state at a referendum what kind of a future you want, and we are inviting the whole world to listen to our voice". \/\/ Infotag<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
