The members of the nongovernmental organization “Dignitas” based in Slobozia, Moldova, who were detained by the Transdniestrian militia on supposition of involvement in the 13 August blast, were released last weekend. <\/p>\n

One of the detained, Alexandru Macovenco, told a press conference on Monday that he was arrested by the Transdniestrian special forces one day after the arrest of Ghenadie Taran, leader of the organization. According to him, though the militia men said they want him to help them in identifying the author of the explosion, during the interrogations they inquired about the activity of the organization only. <\/p>\n

Stefan Uratu, chairman of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Moldova, said that the whereabouts of Ghenadie Taran, who disappeared on August 19, are still unknown. He also said that the Tiraspol blast was only a pretext for detaining the members of “Dignitas” so as to create a positive image to the Transdniestrian militia and leave the impression that the blast was planned by people from outside. <\/p>\n
