Moldovan Parliament Chairman Dumitru Diakov has requested Russian State Duma’s assistance in resolving the Transnistrian conflict. Mr Diakov took the floor in the Russian Parliament’ lower chamber today, and a greater part of his speech was about the Transnistrian dispute.<\/p>\n

Reviewing the roots and reasons of the conflict, he said they are purely political ones, related to the striving of certain political forces to influence Chisinau and to utilize the Transnistrian regime for restoring the Soviet Union. Mr Diakov admitted that some grave blunders were committed last several years which have led to the conflict complication and dragging.<\/p>\n

"And, still, there may be no justification to establishing the non-constitutional regime in the eastern districts of the Republic of Moldova. We are ready for settling the problem through a political dialogue, and are counting on the understanding and support of Moscow. The unresolved Transnistrian problem is a danger for the whole of South-Eastern Europe, and is a proof that international law norms are being ignored", underlined Dumitru Diakov.<\/p>\n

He expressed regret that certain political forces in the State Duma are seeking to raise the question of recognizing the Transnistrian republic officially. In his opinion, this will not help resolve the dispute, nor will it promote the development of the Moldovan-Russian cooperation which Chisinau is strongly interested in.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Mr Diakov highly appreciated the official stance of the Russian leadership on this problem, and welcomed the activities of Mr Igor Morozov, Russian President’s Special Representative at the Chisinau-Tiraspol negotiations.<\/p>\n

Dumitru Diakov also begged Duma’s assistance in removing from Transnistria the huge arsenals of the former Russian 14th Army, and in releasing MP Ilie Ilascu and his comrades from a Transnistrian prison.<\/p>\n

Mr Diakov informed his Russian colleagues on the current economic and political situation in Moldova, on the activities of the majority Alliance for Democracy and Reform, on providing for the rights and freedoms of the Russian-speaker population in Moldova, and on the progress of economic reforms. He particularly stressed Moldova’s strong wish to develop trade and economic relations with Russia, the country’s main economic partner.<\/p>\n

Yesterday, when the Russian legislature were deciding on giving the floor to Diakov, the deputy president of the self-styled Transnistrian republic, Alexander Caraman, also in Moscow these days, asked for a permission to speak, too. Radically-minded deputies from the Liberal Democratic Party, headed by maverick Vladimir Zhirinovsky, demanded that Caraman be allowed to have his word from the tribune. However, a Duma majority voted against hearing the Tiraspol guest. During this verbal duel, Duma Chairman Gennady Seleznev accused Mr Zhirinovsky and his deputies of "deliberately attempting to spoil Russia’s relations with CIS states".<\/p>\n
