Public organisations based in the Transnistrian region of Moldova have sent a letter to Ukrainian Premier Viktor Yanukovich asking him to abrogate the March 2006 decision of the Kiev executive on introduction of the customs regime for Transnistria. <\/p>\n

Starting March 3, 2006, the Transnistrian commodity inflow is allowed on basis of Moldova’s customs stamps only, in compliance with an agreement between Moldovan Premier Vasile Tarlev and former prime minister of Ukraine Yuri Yekhanurov. Tiraspol has labelled these actions as an "economic blockade," but Chisinau rejected this term. <\/p>\n

"Transnitrian firms have lost 240 million dollars since the economic blockade was set up," reads the letter of the coordinator council of public organisations from Transnistria to the new premier of Ukraine. The Transnistrian organisations claim that Ukraine has decided to introduce the new customs regime for Transnistria "under the pressure of some international organisations and politicians from Moldova." <\/p>\n

In this context, Transnistrian organisations asked Premier Yanukovich to withdraw the customs regime "in order to prevent a worse situation of Transnistrian people." <\/p>\n

Premier Yanukovich did not make public an official stance on this issue yet. Earlier, Ukrainian Ambassador to the Russian Federation Oleg Demin has assured that Ukraine will not change the customs regime. However, politicians in Chisinau feared that Premier Yanukovich could annul the customs regime for Transnistrian societies. <\/p>\n

According to the Moldovan Reintegration Ministry, the State Registration Chamber of Moldova has registered 224 Transnistria-based economic agents until now, of them 118 were taken under temporary record and another 106 under permanent record. <\/p>\n
