Moldova’s President Vladimir Voronin thinks that the Transnistrian conflict could be settled during the mandate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which expires in 2008. <\/p>\n

President Voronin has made these statements in an interview given to the Echo Moskvi radio station, during a non-formal summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), held in Moscow on 21-22 July. <\/p>\n

Voronin said there are all the premises to solve the Transnistrian problem during this period, as according to him, the Transnistrian conflict is one of the frozen conflicts from the former USSR, which has real chances to be settled. At the same time, President Voronin stressed that this will not happen as long as there are political ambitions and criminal interests in Moldova’s eastern region. <\/p>\n

In the interview, Vladimir Voronin said he is perplexed by the fact that some Russian officials support the Tiraspol separatist regime, despite the fact that the basic treaty on collaboration, friendship and strategic partnership, Moldova and Russia signed in May 2002, clearly stipulates that the sides condemn the separatism, and Russia recognizes Moldova’s territorial integrity within the borders of 1 January 1991. <\/p>\n

"When the Russian first deputy premier, Aleksandr Zhukov, signs documents, in which the Tiraspol self-proclaimed separatist leader, Igor Smirnov, is called "president", the question appears why this basic treaty exists, if Russia does not observe it," Vladimir Voronin said in his interview for Echo Moskvi. <\/p>\n

Referring to the Russian peacekeepers on the left bank of the Dniestre river, the Moldovan head of state said they have already fulfulled their mission, and that it is necessary now to replace the Russian military by civil observers. "To do this first step, it is necessary, first of all, to withdraw the Russian troops and ammunitions from the Transnistrian region," the president said. <\/p>\n

Asked how Moldova’s authorities will react, after the Tiraspol leaders hold a referendum on the region’s "independence" next September, Vladimir Voronin said such an action will take place in Transnistria for the eighth time, but without any impact. "The organisation of a referendum on the left bank of the Dniestr river represents just a moral satisfaction, which the Tiraspol self-proclaimed leaders refresh from time to time," Voronin said. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan president emphasized that the European monitoring on the Transnistrian segment of the Moldovan-Ukrainian border hindered, to a great extent, the activity of more enterprises from the Transnistrian region which were non-stop producing weaponry.
