Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has said that the Russian ruling bodies support Transnistrian separatists. He made a statement to this effect in an interview with Russia’s Ekho Moskvy radio station on Friday evening before the opening of the CIS informal summit. <\/p>\n

"Now Russia, its ruling bodies – I do not say Russia on the whole, save us God, clearly and openly supports the Transnistrian regime, the regime of Transnistrian separatists. But why – I cannot understand myself and nobody in Moldova understands it", Voronin said. <\/p>\n

He recalled that Moldova and Russia have signed a Basic Agreement on Cooperation, Friendship and Strategic Partnership. <\/p>\n

"The preamble of this agreement says directly that the Russian Federation recognizes the Republic of Moldova’s territorial integrity within the borders as of January 1, 1991. Article 4 of this agreement says that the sides condemn separatism in any forms of its manifestation", the Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin recalled. <\/p>\n

He voiced his misunderstanding in connection with the fact that, on the one hand, Russia openly condemns and, on the other hand, clearly and openly supports Transnistrian separatists. <\/p>\n

The President remarked that the Transnistrian conflict is currently the most resoluble problem among all the frozen conflicts. <\/p>\n

"I am sure that we shall be able to settle this problem together with Vladimir Putin during his presidency in the Russian Federation. There are all prerequisites for this. These are not abstract thoughts, these are real prerequisites. There are all grounds and all possibilities to do it", Voronin underlined. <\/p>\n

According to him, the peacekeeping forces introduced in Transnistria in 1990 (as said, in fact they were introduced in July 1992 – Infotag) have played an exclusively positive role. <\/p>\n

"We say it everywhere, we thank the Russian peacekeepers – there are also Ukrainian and our peacekeepers, but they have already played their role. They must be replaced by military and civil observers", Voronin underlined. <\/p>\n

In his opinion, it will be the first and very serious step for strengthening mutual confidence. <\/p>\n

"Chisinau is ready to guarantee all security measures to this effect. On the part of Chisinau, nobody will make a single step of bad intentions in this line in order to stir up or aggravate the situation in any way. We are waiting for the other side to act, the more so as during these years decisions on evacuation and terms have been taken and they were signed by the Russian president. However, the implementation of these decisions have been put off two or three times", Voronin said. <\/p>\n

He underlined that the matter is of military or civil observers. <\/p>\n
