The Parliament Thursday started examining the legislative initiative on the abolition of the agreement of founding the Commonwealth of Independent states. After several hours of debates, the initiative was withdrawn by the authors. <\/p>\n

”We do not want Russia to benefit from our vote to keep the presence in the CIS. We will retable this initiative in 6-12 months. Meanwhile we propose concentrating our efforts on Moldova’s accession to the EU,” said one of the project’s authors, MP of Our Moldova Alliance (AMN), Vitalia Pavlicenco. <\/p>\n

During the debates, the majoritarian parliamentary group of the Communist Party described the initiative as “dangerous” for Moldova as it can have negative consequences both at internal and foreign level and can influence the relations with the CIS member states, including Russia. <\/p>\n

The Social-Liberal MP Oleg Serebrian said the withdrawal from the CIS could affect even more the relations with Russia, “but this step would be appreciated by the West and Moldova would prove that it heads for the EU.” <\/p>\n
