The Moldovan government rejected an initiative of the parliamentary opposition on denouncing “the Agreement on principles of a peaceful settlement of the armed conflict in the Dniester region of Moldova”, signed in 1992, Itar-Tass learnt on Thursday at the government press service. <\/p>\n

The agreement, signed by the Russian and Moldovan presidents as well as by the leader of the breakaway Dniester republic, put an end to the Dniester armed conflict. Peacekeepers of Russia, Moldova and the breakaway republic were dispatched to the delimitation security zone of the conflict. They have been preserving peace in the region for 14 years, giving a chance to Chisinau and Tiraspol to conduct negotiations on a peaceful settlement of the conflict. <\/p>\n

Deputies of the largest in parliament opposition “Our Moldova” Alliance demanded withdrawing from the agreement. They accompanied the draft on denunciation with a note, accusing Russia of “direct support for the Dniester region”. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan government substantiated its refusal by a premise that “the international participants in the talks on the Dniester region deem it necessary to refrain from unilateral actions in order to avoid additional tension in a Dniester settlement”. <\/p>\n

The government fears that “a rejection of the agreement may result in cooling bilateral relations with Russia, suspending talks on a Dniester settlement and reducing control over the situation in the security zone of the conflict”. <\/p>\n

Earlier, opposition deputies put forth an initiative of denouncing the agreements on Moldova’s participation in the CIS and the Moscow Memorandum on a Dniester settlement of 1997, but the Moldovan government also turned down them. <\/p>\n
