Russia on Thursday urged foreign ministers of the G8 group of industrialised nations not to raise the sensitive issue of so-called "frozen" conflicts in ex-Soviet states when they meet next week before the St. Petersburg summit, Reuters has said. <\/p>\n

"We are ready to discuss any acute international problems with our partners. But we deem it reasonable to limit the G8 agenda by issues on which the group can reach agreement … rather than engage in parallel talks, moreover at such a high level," Mikhail Kamynin, spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, was quoted as saying. <\/p>\n

The Russian side was referring to reports that some of the G8 ministers and leaders were planning to raise with Russia the situation in Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and Moldova’s separatist Dniester province, which face separatist regimes supported by Russia. <\/p>\n

Although any G8 leader is free to raise any issue during the summit, the basic agenda of the meeting has been focused on energy security, education and fighting infectious diseases. <\/p>\n

Foreign ministers of the United States, Russia, Britain, Italy, France, Germany, Canada and Japan meet in Moscow on June 29 to prepare for a full-blown summit of their leaders in St Petersburg on July 15-17. <\/p>\n

Earlier, the Chisinau and the Tbilisi governments had asked the European Union and the United States to press Moscow to withdraw its military presence and to stop provide economic support to the secessionist regions. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, Igor Shuvalov, Putin’s G8 pointman, told a news briefing earlier in the week that "we are not preparing any surprises and hope our partners will not come with any." <\/p>\n
