Tiraspol will hold a referendum on independence of Moldova’s eastern breakaway enclave of Transnistria in late September. At the same time, President Vladimir Voronin has said that the international community and even the Russian Federation will not recognise the results of the referendum. <\/p>\n

Although Chisinau has warned that it will not recognise the results of the independence referendum in the secessionist region, Smirnov told Transnistrian journalists that he will invite international organisations to monitor the referendum. Tiraspol will invite observers from CIS, representatives of other international organisations and of the Russian Federation’s Council. People will be asked if they want the independence of the region from Moldova and what they think about the negotiation process. <\/p>\n

The separatist leader noted that such referendums will be organised at the same time in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, secessionist republics in Georgia. Earlier, the three secessionist republics have announced that they will create joint peacekeeping forces if Chisinau and Tbilisi replace the existing peacekeeping troops that include the Russian Federation. <\/p>\n

At the same time, President Voronin said in Brussels last week that Transnistria has already held six referendums and all of them have failed. "Moldova, the international community and the Russian Federation will not recognise the results of the referendum anyway," the president noted. He outlined that there are major differences between the Transnistrian conflict and crises faced by Georgia and Serbia and any parallels between them are inopportune. <\/p>\n

"More than 15,000 people come to work on the right bank of the Dniester river every day and over 7,000 youths study in educational institutions and universities of the country.
