Head of Parliament Marian Lupu said he is against Tiraspol organizing a referendum on self-determination because there are no democratic institutions in the region, the rights to free expression and association are not ensured and the fundamental human rights are violated. <\/p>\n

According to the Parliament’s press service, at a meeting with Kimmo Kiljunen, Head of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Team on Moldova, Marian Lupu said that the referendum planned by the Tiraspol authorities would not be recognized. ”This referendum will not be recognized by the international community but it will arouse additional political tensions. Elections in Transdniestria can be held only after the region is democratized and demilitarized in compliance with Ukraine’s Plan and documents approved by the Moldovan Parliament last summer," Lupu said. <\/p>\n

The Moldovan head of Parliament said Transdniestrian region’s status must be formulated during negotiations and opted for reopening the talks between Chisinau and Tiraspol. He rejected Tiraspol authorities’ accusations that Moldova imposed an economic blockade on Transdniestria and appreciated the activity of the EU Border Assistance Mission on the Moldovan-Ukrainian frontier. <\/p>\n
