The local Respublika social-political organization disagrees with the recent proposal made by Chairman of the Transnistrian supreme soviet [parliament], leader of the Obnovleniye [Renovation] party Yevgeny Shevchook – to invite the United Nations to help resolve the Transnistria conflict. <\/p>\n

Respublika has sent an open letter to Shevchook, writing that during 15 years of the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic’s existence, the United Nations has not done anything for Transnistria, would not show whatever interest to the problems the region has been suffering in the conditions of an economic blockade and approaching humanitarian catastrophe. Respublika presumes that the UN is thus not eligible to replace Russia as a guarantor of the settlement process. The Movement stands against the replacement of Russian peacekeepers, "who have proved in deeds their fidelity to international commitments", with United Nations’ blue helmets. <\/p>\n

Respublika also dislikes that the Obnovleniye leader has spoken out for creating a ‘union state’ with Moldova, although only very recently he said that the anticipated union is not able to bring anything good to the people of Transnistria. Respublika leaders have reminded that by its constitution, the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic is a sovereign, independent, democratic, and law-governed state. <\/p>\n

The letter authors asked to explain to the wide public some moments in Shevchook’s report to the memorable London conference, and to say clearly if that report was an expression of the supreme soviet’s official position on questions of settlement of relations with the Republic of Moldova. <\/p>\n

The report was prepared for the last month’s London international conference on various views on resolving the Transnistria conflict. <\/p>\n

Obnovleniye was founded in 2000 by liberally minded financial and industrial structures of Transnistria. The movement won a convincing victory at the December 2005 parliamentary elections, having received 23 mandates in the 42-seat forum. One of the Obnovleniye leaders, Yevgeny Shevchook of the much-spoken Sheriff Company, was elected speaker of the Transnistrian parliament. Earlier this month, the movement was converted into a same-name political party. <\/p>\n

Respublika was established in 2005 as a pro-Smirnov organization for the approaching presidential elections due next December. In the nearest time, it will also be transformed into a political party. <\/p>\n

Respublika works to further have Igor Smirnov as president of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic, although he has been occupying this post since the republic’s establishment in 1990.
