\"\"Withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was not included in the GUAM summit’s agenda, Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has said. Voronin arrived today in Kiev to participate in a meeting of the GUAM member-states’ presidents. <\/p>\n

Asked by the Ukrainian journalists if Chisinau intends to leave the CIS, Voronin said that such a proposal has been put forward by the Moldovan opposition parties. He added that this is parliament’s remit. <\/p>\n

Voronin said he does not see GUAM as an alternative to the CIS. He said the summit’s priority is to hand over the GUAM chairmanship from Moldova to Ukraine and to take GUAM up to a higher level of international organisation. <\/p>\n

Asked how GUAM could contribute to solving the Transnistrian conflict, Voronin recalled that three of the organisation’s member-states are facing territorial problems. Voronin said that it is opportune to jointly look for a solution to the existing situation, and spoke out for joining efforts to settle conflicts in the GUAM area. <\/p>\n

The GUAM summit started today in Kiev. The participants in the summit are due to complete the process of GUAM’s transformation into a regional organisation called the Organisation for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM. The summit is attended by the Georgian, Ukrainian, Azerbaijani and Moldovan presidents, as well as by the Polish president, Bulgarian vice president, and top US and Romanian officials. The participants in the summit are to adopt statutory documents and set up the Kiev-based GUAM secretariat. They are also due to sign additional documents aimed at strengthening cooperation, including in energy. <\/p>\n

The summit was preceded by a meeting of GUAM foreign ministers. Moldova was represented at the meeting by Deputy Foreign and European Integration Minister Valeriu Ostalep. According to the Foreign and European Integration Ministry’s press service, the GUAM states’ foreign ministers approved the constitutive documents to be adopted by the GUAM states’ presidents during the summit.
