The member states of the European Union, GUAM [a regional organization uniting Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, and Moldova], and the United States have condemned the unilateral actions by the Transnistrian administration to seize, last April 21, the Varnitsa village’s river port that is under Moldova’s jurisdiction. <\/p>\n

On Thursday, the OSCE Council sat to discuss various aspects of the Transnistria problem, and called upon Tiraspol to return urgently and unconditionally the seized port property and release the people detained in the port territory. <\/p>\n

The representatives of the European Union, GUAM, the United States, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine spoke out for replacement of the current peacekeeping mechanism in Transnistria with a multi-national mission under an international mandate, because "the tense situation in the Security Zone and the Tiraspol regime’s continuing provocations are a bright proof that the current peacekeeper mechanism has led not to settlement but to freezing of the conflict and to protection of the separatists’ interests, which is unacceptable for the international community". <\/p>\n

The meeting participants called on the conflicting sides to resume the 5+2 talks and to discuss primarily the region’s demilitarization and democratization, as well as monitoring of Transnistrian military-industrial enterprises, and a change of the peacekeeping mechanism. <\/p>\n

All OSCE member states, except Russia, admitted as unfounded and non-productive the Transnistrian authorities’ actions aimed at self-isolation of the region after the introduction, last March 3, of the universally recognized rules of customs clearance on the Transnistrian segment of the Moldova-Ukraine state border. The delegations pointed out that the consolidation of the integrated customs area of the Republic of Moldova remains one of the nation’s priority objectives. <\/p>\n

The European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine has been promised a comprehensive support for the sake of establishing and maintaining an efficient customs and border-guard regime on the border’s Transnistrian section. <\/p>\n
